Makut Waterfall, Tioman, Malaysia

We enjoyed a fabulous boat trip to the south of the island, today.  We visited Makut - a quiet but friendly village and, reputedly, a location for filming of scenes from South Pacific back in 1958!

We walked along a meandering, paved pathway through the jungle up to the waterfall, spotting lizards large and small along the way.

It's not massive as waterfalls go, however it has a pool which was plenty large and deep enough for four of us to swim about!  The water felt extremely chilly at first, but was blissful in the heat of the day and it was very peaceful to sit and let the water cascade over our shoulders.  We probably spent an hour there before heading back to the jetty to meet our boat.

As it was Sue's birthday, we decided to have lunch at the Tunamaya Resort, a few minutes along the coast from Makut.  Personally, I found it too organised and lacking in character although the food was absolutely delicious.  The dining staff were polite, helpful and looked efficient in their uniforms, but their understanding of English was poor and the manager had to be called so that we could request pasta (we'd checked it was an item already on the menu) instead of French fries for the girls with their meals.  Also a request for "salt" resulted in a bottle of sauce being delivered to our table.  Nevertheless, we left with appetites sated and trotted back along the resort's private jetty to our boat.

As we clambered aboard, and noticed the masks and fins we had left on deck, it dawned on us: WHY hadn't we remembered that we were going snorkelling on the way back??? A full tummy isn't the best condition on rolling tides!!

Oh well, we managed a super snorkelling session off the boat, near Nipah. I am rubbish at identifying species of fish.  Suffice to say that there were lots of them in a myriad of colours and sizes.   No reef sharks or turtles seen though, sadly... maybe tomorrow...
